Implantation Bleeding In Early Pregnancy

Implantation bleeding in early pregnancy

During the early stages of pregnancy and when trying for a baby, many women are on high alert for any changes happening to their body. So, when light bleeding occurs, many women tend to worry.

However, light bleeding in early pregnancy is common and could be implantation bleeding.

What Is Implantation Bleeding?

Implantation bleeding is light vaginal bleeding often mistaken for a light period in early pregnancy. This usually happens around 10 to 14 days after conception or around the time your period would have been due. However, don’t worry if you haven’t experienced any light bleeding, many women don’t experience it at all.

What causes implantation bleeding?

Implantation bleeding can happen when the fertilised egg implants in the lining of the mother’s womb.

Implantation signs & symptoms

Many women experience implantation bleeding before they even know they are pregnant or before they have experienced morning sickness.

Some signs of implantation bleeding are:

  • Bleeding that is lighter in flow than what you get during your period.
  • Blood that is brown or pinkish in colour.
  • Mild cramping

How long will it last?

Many women only experience implantation bleeding for around one or two days, so shorter than most average periods and many women often don’t even notice it.

Other Signs of Early Pregnancy

If you are unsure if the bleeding is implantation bleeding, some other signs of pregnancy to look out for include:

  • Vomiting (Morning Sickness)
  • Food Cravings or Aversions
  • Needing the toilet more than usual
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Tender or swollen breasts or nipples

Treatment

Implantation bleeding will stop on its own. However, if you are worried that you’ve bled a lot or have experienced bleeding without pain or cramping, we do recommend you contact your GP.
