Why Has My Hair Changed During Pregnancy? | Window to the Womb

Every single one of us will experience hair changes, regardless whether we’re pregnant or not pregnant. We all have experienced hair falling out and hair texture changing due to treatments we put our hair through. As humans, we all put our hair through a hard time but we do it all in the name of vanity. However, if you are pregnant you will notice your hair might have changed throughout pregnancy and this is due to your pregnancy hormones.

So, during pregnancy your hair will change and usually it changes for the better – that’s if you are one of the lucky ones who will notice your hair will be a lot more thicker and shinier. But, if you’re not as lucky to get thick shiny hair, you might find your hair is a lot more dry and gets greasier than before. For some women, they might notice the texture of the hair has changed. These changes will happen particularly during the 2nd trimester.

For those who are now wondering ‘how?’ and ‘why did my hair get thicker?’, the cause is that during pregnancy, you don’t shed as much hair as you would normally before you got pregnant. So, for those women who shed a lot of hair usually and now during your pregnancy aren’t shedding as much, this is because your hair was on a 3 month cycle of growing, resting and then shedding. Before pregnancy, 85% of your hair would be growing and 15% would be resting, which then leads your hair shedding when you style and wash your hair. The 15% when the hair would be in the resting period before pregnancy, after pregnancy the resting hair phase of the hair growth cycle expands due to the hormones.

So now that it probably all makes sense why you have had a change in hair type, you can look forward to styling it.
When your hair has been styled, cut or dyed, it can make you feel fabulous and boost your self-confidence. It is understandable that during pregnancy you don’t really have as much energy to spend hours and hours on your hair like you may have done previously. But, it doesn’t mean your hair will only look good if you have spent hours styling your hair. There are hairstyles which can take you less than 5 minutes with minimum effort and will look great in the summer time and best of all can be achieved by pregnant women.

Here are some hairstyles which will work well on all different hair types, whether its thick, greasy or frizzy. Best of all these hairstyles don’t require any heat styling products:

  • A messy side bun: All you need to do is get all your hair to one side of your head and tie-up in a loose ponytail using an elastic band. Next, just twist the hair in the desired bun shape and secure with another elastic band and some grips. You can loosen parts of the bun up and pull strands out to give a more effortless look. If you are wanting to make it summery, you can add in a flower or bejewelled grip.

  • Half up/half down: This another great easy hairstyle which is extremely simple and takes less than 5minutes. All you will need to do is twist or braid back some hair from the front near the face and grip it at the back. Again, you can jazz the hair style up with adding fancy hair accessories.

  • Hair up: Another very easy hassle-free hairstyle; this is just literally tying your hair up in a ponytail. Again, there’s many ways you can add to a ponytail by adding in fancy hair accessories. You can even take a thick strand of your own hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the elastic band to cover it up.

  • Side braid: Side braids are super easy to do; this hairstyle can look very put together, even though it may have taken you under a minute to do. Another tip is to sleep on it and the next day you wake up, you should have some waves in your hair.
