How to Establish a Bedtime For Your Baby

In the first 6 months of your baby’s life, it is important that they should be in your room day and night to avoid the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Generally, most babies are responsive and able to start a bedtime routine at around 6 to 8 weeks. Establishing this routine can make night-times easier and more straightforward, as your little one will get some indication that bedtime is approaching! Getting them into a relaxing bedtime routine can be a great opportunity to have 1-to-1 time with your baby.

This routine can consist of…

  • Giving your baby a bath before bed.
  • Putting your baby in clean night clothes and a fresh nappy.
  • Reading them a bedtime story.
  • Playing white noise.
  • Saying a bedtime phrase, e.g. ‘Night Night’.
  • Having cuddle time with your baby.

How To Help Your Baby Sleep On A Night-Time...

To help your baby sleep at night, you may find it useful to..

  • Keep the lighting to a minimum: maybe invest in a nightlight so you aren’t relying on your main light.
  • Minimise talking or keep your volume low.
  • Feed and change your baby before bed.
  • Do not play with your baby before bed: overstimulation can cause excitement which will wake up your child.
  • Adjust the room temperature.
  • Put your baby to bed drowsy, but awake, this will help your baby associate their bed with the process of falling asleep.
